Excursions into the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a protected national park and by establishing the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary this utopia with its crystal-clear water, white beaches and virgin coral reef is attempted preserved for future generations to experience. Whale/Dolphin watching tours

While you may spot whales and dolphins from your beach villa, here is an opportunity to see them up close. Experienced marine naturalists guide your whale and dolphin safari. Typical for the area is Southern Right whale and the Humpback whale.

The Bazaruto Islands

Enjoy some of Mozambique's most popular islands. The Bazaruto Achipelago comprises four large islands and a chain of tropical islets and sand banks. A relaxing sailing trip around these islands, providing plenty of opportunities for swimming and snorkeling, is included in the complimentary program. Afterwards you can enjoy a picnic on a beach on one of the nearby islands.

Sport fishing

The area around Nyati Beach Lodge is a paradise for any sports fisherman, whether it be fly fishing in the white surf along the beach for the smooth, transparent bonefish, catching a barracuda to the sound of the quiet flapping sail of a local dhow - or hunting for "big game fish" like marlin and sailfish in the darkest depths of the sea, which despite the help of horsepower and modern techniques, still give a "fight to the very end". All fishing trips will be organized on site.  

Spearfishing / Freediving

The Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the best places in the World to go spearfishing. Equipped with spearguns our trained professionals will guide you to the best areas for hunting big game fish such as sailfish, marlin, king macakrel tuna and kingfish. Please note this form of fishing is only for experienced freedivers. All fishing trips will be organized on site, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information, prices etc.

The Island Beaches

Visitors find a string of tropical islands and sandbanks glittering in the ocean like the most precious gems. Kicking off your shoes and making footprints in the sand is the first thought that springs to mind when you arrive at Nyati Beach. The area's unspoiled beaches and surrounding archipelago indisputably rank among the African Continent's finest. This has been known for centuries. 10 km of unspoiled coastline offer the perfect setting for relaxing in the sun and playing in the water. With its total tranquility this peaceful paradise is free of beach vendors and reserved for Nyati Beach Lodge guests only - the perfect backdrop for surfing, swimming and water activities. Gather beautiful shells from the beach - you might even come across the rare pansy shell - or simply enjoy the magnificent ocean view from a shady spot underneath the greens of a tree.

Scuba diving

The area is one of the best locations for scuba diving in the world and its waters are alive with many species of marine life including dolphins, Manta ray and the occasional shark for the more adventurous. The Bazaruto archipelago and coral reefs host an outstanding and diverse marine life with over 400 species of fishes, including the elusive sea horses, nesting turtles, giant manta rays, dolphins, whales and whale sharks as well as the last surviving populations of the enigmatic dugong. The shoals of tropical fish fill the untouched coral reefs with an ever-changing spectrum of color. Beginners and intermediate divers can receive professional instruction from the skilled instructors of the Nyati PADI Dive Centre.

Sport sailing

Experience the thrill of sailing the Bazaruto Archipelago as your own captain with the Hobie Cats at your free disposal or simply relax and enjoy an afternoon sunset cruise with one of our captains. Memories of the country's colourful historic past are brought to mind as the fishermen pole their dhows out onto the sea to catch the trade wind. Once they transported slaves and ivory to the East - today they provide the perfect setting for romantic sunset trips and excursions to the surrounding islands. Enjoy daily cruises to uninhabited islands where you can barbecue freshly caught fish or enjoy a picnic in the pristine surroundings.

Kayaking / Canoeing

There is no better way to see one of Mozambique's most storied coastlines. Be your own guide and explore the amazing nature of the Bazaruto Archipelago with its rich flora, fauna and wildlife, home to e.g. the enigmatic dugong and scores of flamingos.

Wind surfing & Kite surfing

Where do you get the best of both worlds and its not on Disney's Hanna Montanna?  At Nyati beach lodge that is right.  Here you have the perfect conditions for both the open sea and the calmer glassy estuary waters to kite or wind surf on.  Should you seek more daring surfing then the endless open sea with waves are for you and if your style is best enjoyed on the calmer waters, then the long stretch of sandbank on the inside of the bay will be the place of your hours of fun.  During low tide you can kite between the sandbanks on flat glas-water and on high tide you can kite along the spit.  Over spring tide we have a tidal difference of 4m and during neap tide a difference of 2m.  The wind direction is mostly South-East and best months are July and August.   You can enjoy surfing with a kite from 9 -17 while it is always best to have a smaller, perhaps a 9 and a bigger, perhaps a 17 kite to ensure most benefit of most wind conditions.  Kite or Wind surfing at Nyati is an experience that you will not forget.  With all the right conditions, ample space and a beautiful surrounding this tropical location is the perfect Kite & Wind surfing location.  

Other water sports

Other complimentary water sports include snorkeling, wind surfing, kite surfing, body boarding, pedalo boating in the calm protected waters of the lagoon or the more challenging waters of the Indian Ocean.

Marine guided excursions

Enjoy one of the marine guided routes and explore the environment's less noticed beauties.  Walk along the bay and learn more about the estuary life and dune vegetations.  Enjoy kayaking to the opposite island and learn more about what you see. take a relaxed hike down the estuary and be amazed with all the interesting facts and traces of life. There are so much to see and learn and will sure compliment your holiday experience at Nyati  

Excursions to local fishing villages and communities

Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary offers much more than an island paradise with endless beaches, sunshine and sea. The extensive wetlands with mangrove swamps, salt marshes and mudflats are home to large colonies of pelicans and flamingos. Discover the Inhambane estuary by dhow to visit a small local fishing community, where the inhabitants still live in their distinctive straw huts with earth floors and prepare food over open fires. We also offer a visit to the interesting farming project that was set up at the time the reserve was established.

Tour the city of Vilanculos

Take a tour around the city of Vilanculos with an English-speaking guide, where you will get a quick insight into the daily life of the local inhabitants. A visit to the local market is a colorful experience, where you will have the opportunity to purchase souvenirs such as beautiful earthenware, carved wooden figures and woven baskets. Here the farmers sell their own vegetables and fruit and you can watch the baker and the barber at work.

Dining at Nyati Beach Lodge

Enjoy a variety of great dining in the Nyati Sea View Restaurant & Bar. Dinners alternate between exquisite gourmet meals served by candle light at beautifully appointed tables in the restaurant overlooking the Bazaruto Archipelago and the last golden rays of the sun in the blue ocean; inviting buffets around the illuminated pool and casual evening barbecues served beneath the stars in the lodge's outdoor eating area on the beach. Various tempting dishes and salads make up the luncheon buffets - unless you choose to go Robinson Crusoe-style and enjoy a picnic on the beach of one of the small and untouched tropical islands of the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary. Continental breakfast is served every morning and guests can enjoy poolside refreshments and snacks all day long.

Yacht top-up

Transfer from Nyati Beach Lodge to Maximillien, for an exciting 4 or 7 day top-up experience.

Enjoy shallow scuba dives, snorkelling, fishing, island-hopping, early morning sails and beautiful scenic evenings.  On the last day, a leisure sail back to Vilanculos, in time for a midday transfer to the airport.
