The Bazaruto Archipelago

Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary, Inhambane Province, Mozambique

You find the exclusive Nyati Beach Lodge in the truly unspoiled tropical holiday paradise of the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park where hotel, resort and lodge counts are kept at a minimum to preserve the delicate nature of the reserve and ensure sustainable tourism.

The Bazaruto Archipelago - The Pearl of the Indian Ocean

The Bazaruto Archipelago has earned its reputation as the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean', due to its a mix paradise-like beaches, untouched wilderness, vast offshore coral reefs, and rich indigenous wildlife. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a group of six islands off the coast of Mozambique, near the mainland city of Vilanculos. The Archipelago comprises the pristine islands of Bazaruto, Banque, Benguera (Benguerra), Shell, Santa Carolina (Paradise Island) and Magaruque. The Bazaruto islands were originally formed from sand deposited by the great Limpopo River, which has since shifted its course.

The Bazaruto Bay and Islands

The Bazaruto islands offer unspoiled white sandy beaches, World Class deep sea fishing, salt water fly fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, surfing and unlimited opportunities to explore the untouched fauna of the Archipelago. The Bazaruto islands are covered by large sand dunes (the sand is so soft it squeaks beneath your feet) and freshwater lakes, which are nesting grounds for beautiful black-winged flamingos. Small herds of red duiker antelope still roam the Bazaruto islands, carving out a precarious existence alongside freshwater crocodiles and samango monkeys. The choppy reefs of the Bazaruto Bay are fertile breeding grounds for turtles, dolphins and dugongs. (See Wildlife in Mozambique to read more on the animals you can find in the Bazaruto Archipelago)

The Bazaruto is a renowned National Park

In 1971, the Portuguese bestowed national park status on the Bazaruto Archipelago to protect its fragile fauna. Today the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary is working to preserve this utopia with its crystal-clear water, white beaches and virgin coral reefs for future generations. In order to protect the fragile ecosystem and the Bazaruto Archipelago's further development, the reserve has been fenced in as much as possible and local rangers have been employed to patrol both the land areas and the part of the Bazaruto reserve that stretches into the sea. Moreover the hotel, resort and lodge counts are kept at a minimum to preserve the delicate nature and ensure sustainable tourism in this area of Mozambique. Guests enjoy complete privacy at Nyati Beach Lodge with no other lodges or hotel guests in sight as far as the eye can reach.
